Using ClayScope

Quick start  ·  Beta release  ·  ~5 minute read

ClayScope logs and scores your clay target rounds — a quick session total, a full shot-by-shot round, or a whole squad at the trap — and turns them into your averages, straights and miss patterns. It works offline and syncs when you're back on signal. Here's everything you need to get going.

The 30-second version. Create an account, tap Log Round, and pick how much detail you want: Session for a fast total, By Shot for a full round, or By Post to score post-by-post at the trap. Your scores land in History, and your averages build under Analytics.

1. Getting started

Head to app.clayscope.com and create a free account with your email. During the open beta, every feature is unlocked — there's nothing to buy.

Once you're in, take a moment in Profile to set your home club and, if you shoot registered, your ATA number. Your home club becomes a one-tap shortcut when you log, and each new session remembers the last place you shot — so most days you never touch the club field.

2. Install it on your phone

ClayScope is a web app, so there's no App Store download — you add it to your home screen instead, and it opens full-screen like any other app.

Installing matters because ClayScope is offline-first: your rounds are saved on the device the moment you enter them, so a dead spot at the club never costs you a score. When you're back on signal it syncs automatically in the background.

3. Three ways to log a round

Tap Log Round and choose the entry mode that matches how much detail you have. They all feed the same record and the same averages — the difference is depth.

ModeWhat it capturesBest for
SessionYour total for one or more disciplines — e.g. “23 of 25 singles.”Logging scores after the fact, or a fast entry between rounds.
By ShotA full round on one screen — tap the targets you missed; everything else counts as a hit.Recording a round in detail when you can see the whole card at once.
By PostThe same shot-by-shot detail, one post at a time, with the screen kept awake.Scoring yourself live at the trap, station by station.

Session also handles a whole event in one entry: add a line for each discipline — say 100 singles and 100 handicap — and they save together under one session. In every mode you can backdate the date and time to record a round you shot earlier.

A note on the score

Trap scoring is by exception: every target counts as a hit unless you mark it a miss. So a straight — a clean 25 — is simply a round where you tapped nothing. The big number at the top of the screen is always your running total.

4. By Post: scoring at the trap

By Post is built for scoring in real time while you shoot. Set your discipline, starting post and (for handicap) your yardage, then tap Start scoring. The setup folds away so the big target cells own the screen.

Finish the last post and the round saves to your device. From there you can add another round to the same session or finish up.

5. Scoring a squad

You don't have to be the only shooter. From Home, tap 🎯 Score a squad to keep score for a whole trap line.

Only the round you shot together is shared. Everyone's full history — their averages and past rounds — stays private to them.

6. Your history & averages

Two tabs turn your entries into a record:

Home gives you the at-a-glance version: recent form and your standout streaks without opening the full analytics.

7. ATA registered targets

If you've added your ATA number in Profile, you can tag a session as ATA registered when you log it, and ClayScope keeps that average separate from practice. You can also import past scores to build your history from targets you've already shot.

On accuracy. Scores you enter or import are your own record, kept for your reference — they're self-recorded, not verified against the ATA's official database. Your registered average of record is always the one the ATA publishes.
